We meet at 10 am in Fetcham Village Hall on the third Monday of the month for a winter season of talks in October, November, January, February, March and April. In December we go for a walk and Christmas lunch, again on the third Monday. The group is open to members of all local U3As and welcomes visitors. Information about the programme is usually circulated by email so please get in touch if you would like to be informed of meetings and visits. We organise visits to a variety of sites, mostly in the summer period. The group started in March 2003.

Our mission is to explore Britain’s industrial heritage through talks, discussion and site visits, which are arranged to suit the group and the opening arrangements of the sites to be visited. We hear presentations prepared by members on topics of specialist knowledge and also invite outside speakers. Since 2009 we have had talks on Steam Train Outings, Monsieur Eiffel, Cable Telegraphy, The Lovelace Bridges Project, Private Flying in the Fifties, English Windmills, Iron Making, London Water Transport, The RNLI. Jet Propulsion, Amateur Radio, Cables, Brooklands and Land Speed Records, Oil Refining, Thames Crossings, Brooklands and the Hurricane and the Growth of Utilities in Surrey.

Over the same period we have visited Dover Castle, Portsmouth Dockyard and North Downs WWll Pillboxes and are shortly to visit Betchworth Quarries, the Docklands Museum and the local recycling facilities run by Grundon Waste Management Ltd. We also intend to get down to the Great Dorset Steam Fair for the third time at the end of August and to arrange a visit to a brickworks in Sussex.

Our winter season meetings start with:-

Monday 17 October 2011 - Chris Orlebar - "The Concorde Story" by the author of the definitive book of the same name, now in its seventh edition.
Monday 21 November 2011 - John Bourne - "The Post Office Tower" by the former chief engineer of the tower.
Monday 19 December 2011 - Christmas walk and lunch - Will the snow be as deep as in 2009 and 2010?
