Music Appreciation Group was one of the first groups started 5 years ago, meeting in each others houses and just playing
whatever music we had brought with us. We have subsequently developed into a group of 13 (unlucky for some but not us)
who devise, prepare and present our own programs to the other members. By having different presenters who have a complete
free hand in what they do we have had a most varied program over these 5 years. We have had just about everything from
the conventional to the downright odd. I refer to the evening when one of our members got hold of some African instruments
and African music and we were all playing along with the CD’s. Great fun. In the group are people who love Jazz, Brass
band music, Musicals, Classical and many others subjects so one cannot be surprised at what is presented and on many
occasion our feet are tapping. Sometimes the walk or drive home also becomes very musical with people singing along the
street or in their car (and we haven’t even had an alcoholic drink). Quite a few of our members have played music which
has special meanings during their life and it is amazing how often Elgar’s Nimrod variation and the Pomp & Circumstance march are played.
Several of our members also belong to the Art Appreciation group so it was not as unusual as one might think when we
studied some of Lowrie’s pictures appropriate to an evening of ballet which incorporated them as tableaux.
We also manage to get the group along with visitors to visit the Dorking Halls, Epsom Playhouse, Leatherhead Theatre
and the Yehudi Menuhin Halls for various concerts.
