We started in September with 12 members, meeting in each others houses on the first Wednesday of the month. From the start it was decided that all members should be involved with selecting the books and running the discussion afterwards.
We have twelve meetings a year and the January meeting is traditionally Poetry readings, with an excellent buffet lunch at one of our member’s house. We stick to poetry as no-one has time for reading long books during December.
Our books range from murder mysteries to the classics – ‘The Lovely Bones’ to ‘The Tenant of Wildfell Hall’. More recently ‘On foot through Africa’.
Some books which we have professed not to have liked frequently provoke the most discussion.
One of my favourite books has been ‘The Daughter of Time’ in which a police inspector who was recovering in bed in hospital, got hold of some books about Richard III and his involvement in the Princes’ in the Tower mystery. By the end of the book it cast much doubt about Richards guilt.
